Pedestrian Right-of-Way Zone

Safe Streets Louisville, Ky - Right of Way Zone

Pedestrian Right-of-Way Zone

We continue to propose an absolute, unambiguous Pedestrian Right-of-Way Zone within three blocks of schools - inside and outside crosswalks. We are coupling that concept with a proposed Jefferson Count Public Schools (JCPS) policy giving priority school assignment to students and parents who will commit to walking, bicycling or TARCing to school. The concept partners Metro government, JCPS, TARC, PTAs, neighborhoods, Metro Health Dept, LMPD, Metro Parks and others.

History

In 2007 Safe Streets Louisville introduced to the Mayor's office the concept of a Pedestrian First ordinance granting pedestrians an uncontested right-of-way within three blocks of schools and parks. We were told to go study the proposal.

On October 3, 2008 we again asked local elected and appointed leadership for their support of the pedestrian right-of-way within three blocks of school & parks. We left messages with the offices of:
Mayor Abramson
Council member Tina Ward-Pugh
Council member Tom Owen
Council member Maryanne Butler
Council member David Tandy
Council member Rick Blackwell
Council member Judith Green
Mary Lou Northern
Dr. Troutman
Melissa Mershon
Kim Allen.

Dr. Troutman has asked how he can help.
Mary Lou Northern returned our call.
We will be contacting leadership again with the same request. We need their support of the Pedestrian First ordinance.
